Winter Window Boxes

I don't have a very nice view from my kitchen window so I try to keep something pretty in the window box year round.

I bought a bunch of mini mums to plant for fall but they hung out on the buffet in the kitchen for too long and never got planted.

Now that I have an empty window box I can't help but think about what I'm going to do for the upcoming season. If you live in a cold climate your winter display can last through the winter.

I found some great window boxes to inspire us....

I love the glass ornaments and dogwood branches used in this display.

Pinecones are one of my favorite things to decorate with for the holidays.

The icicles hanging from this box are a fun idea. You can use beaded ornaments or garland for this look.
Martha Stewart

I love this shed all decked out for the holidays. Last year I added some greens and a wreath to the playhouse just for fun.

When putting together your winter display it's best to start when the soil is still workable and not frozen. I like to use a few different varieties of evergreen branches to start with. Snip a few inches off of the bottom of the branches to keep fresh and push deep into the dirt so the wind won't take them away. Once your window box is finished, water it. The water will freeze, holding everything in place throughout the winter. If it warms up a bit, keep it watered until the temperature drops below freezing.

Will you be dressing up your windows this winter?

  1. this is so weird to me b/c i grew up in southern california. so when you plant your window box and water it, then it freezes and everything still stays alive? i never knew this. i love the little martha stewart shed, so cute.

  3. I read your post, but kept returning to that first picture of your beautiful kitchen! I hadn't seen it before- the wooden butcher block island/furniture is so great! I bet you made it! And I'm totally jealous of your fridge- ours is too tiny.

  6. I like the second window box, it is simple but makes a statement. I do however like the actual box from the Martha Stewart photo :)

  7. Thanks Megan,
We bought the island at a little shop that was using it as their checkout counter. We opened the wall between the kitchen and living room so we could have an island, I knew we would use it all the time.

  14. Loving the kitchen too! I have a window box outside my kitchen window made from an old herb crate a girlfriend gave to me for my birthday one year. We added some iron brackets to it. I love changing it out for the seasons, but tend to use "faux" as our weather fluctuates so much here in the south. It was 75 and sunny yesterday, dreary and 55 today! Thanks for the inspiration.

  18. very pretty winter displays in window boxes. I don't have window boxes, but something like that would look pretty on the rail of my deck.

  21. I did mine for the first time last winter. I waited too long and the soil was already frozen. I read online that you can pour boiling water over top of the soil and it worked! I'm going to try to do it earlier this year, though. The neighbours probably thought I was strange while outside with my kettle. ;)

    Beautiful inspiration photos!

  24. What great inspiration and tips! We have window boxes that are planted with boxwood & ivy, but I love to see the evergreens overflowing from the inspiration photos. I might try this in our urns on the front porch. Your playhouse is darling.
