Exterior paint color

I have finally decided on a color for the house. This was such a hard decision. It was making me crazy...and not only me....sorry friends and family.

The paint with the circle around it is the color we chose...Crownsville Gray by Benjamin Moore. Below and to the left is Devonshire Green by BM and to the right is Master Room by Ralph Lauren. Here is how I narrowed it down this weekend.

I thought I had to choose a color from the small paint deck the contractor gave me since the siding will come pre-painted. After finding out I wasn't limited and could use any paint color or brand, my options grew. I should have asked before I bought all those paint samples....none of the colors really appealed to me.

We went to see a new construction house that our contractor just finished. The siding we are using has a cedar texture and we wanted to see it on a house. When we pulled up I was happy to see a color I liked. The owner gave us the name and I was off to the paint store....again. Knowing all along that it was probably to dark for our small house, but it was worth a try.

The color on top is Devonshire Green and the bottom color is Meadow Trail by Sherwin Williams....a bit too green.

Another inspiration was this adorable cottage that I've had in my favorite's folder since we started making plans for our house. I love the color and the copper above the window is my favorite. I was sure this was going to be it.

When I got the RL sample up I was surprised that it was almost identical to Devonshire Green. The struggle for me is this color looks great on both style houses but it is so dark. I couldn't pull the trigger.

Master Room by RL is on the right next to Crownsville Gray.
Am I convinced this is the right color? No. I don't think I will be until I see it on the whole house. At least now I can focus on something other than paint!

We have a couple things to do before we hurry up and wait...I will fill you in as we go.
If you missed it, you can read about the plans here.

  8. I had the same problem last year when I was picking paint color for the trim and windows on my house. I thought it would be easy because I knew what color I wanted...but then trying to find it and getting it not too light or too dark....well...I went through 12 colors before I found the right one. It ended up darker and grayer than I thought it would be. But it was the right choice to go with my brick. I'll be looking forward to seeing your whole house painted.

  9. All of the colors look pretty good to me ... and I love the one you've chosen! It sure helps to see it already up on another house. I had a friend choose a green color from a little tiny card and when her house was painted it looked like a mint marshmallow! She had it immediately repainted!!!

  12. is the picture above a house on Jefferson Street in Naperville? If yes, we used the same house to pick the Devonshire Green color - my wife walked up, rang the doorbell and talked to the owner, who apparently was also the builder and knew the color by name.

  21. I hear you! I must agree that it’s really hard to decide when picking the right color for your exterior paint. But then, regardless of any limitation, it’s still better to stick with your color scheme. This would keep you from having a hard time making a choice. Anyway, I soo like the Master Room by Ralph Lauren. The color was dark, but it doesn’t look shadowy in my eyes.

  22. It's funny because I can relate to your story. I also asked (and bothered) my friends when I repainted my home exterior. I kept on asking their opinions about the color that I should use. In the end, I went for a country redwood color; and it turned out great thanks to my buddies! :)

  23. Picking the right color for the exterior is dreadful! In choosing a color for the exterior, you have to consider a lot of outside factors too. Like with the entry door color, you have to choose a color that compliments the entry door or else they'd clash. But then, you're new exterior wall color looks stunning! Julio Wells

  32. So how do you protect your roofing? We all know that there are a lot of factors that destroy your roof. The roof is constantly bettered by the sun; it will get battered by the snow and the rain. Montclair painters near me As shown it makes sound financial sense to invest in a coating of reflective roof paint if you are a business owner looking to control the heat in large warehouses or buildings.
